How Moving Costs Are Calculated
Licensed long distance movers price interstate moves by cubic feet (CF)of truck space used — not by weight alone. Your rate per cubic foot scales with distance. Every move has a minimum shipment of 286 CF ($1,500+) regardless of how little you're moving.
| Home Size | Cubic Feet | Under 500 mi | 500–1,500 mi | 1,500–3,500 mi |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Studio / 1 BR | 286–450 CF | $1,500–$2,000 | $1,800–$3,000 | $2,500–$4,000 |
| 2 Bedrooms | 600–800 CF | $1,800–$2,500 | $2,500–$4,000 | $3,500–$5,500 |
| 3 Bedrooms | 1,000–1,400 CF | $3,000–$4,200 | $4,000–$5,600 | $5,500–$8,500 |
| 4+ Bedrooms | 1,600–2,200 CF | $4,800–$6,600 | $6,400–$8,800 | $8,500–$13,000+ |
Alaska & Hawaii: $13–$16/CF. Minimum 286 CF ($1,500+). All rates include fuel surcharge. AMSA industry data.

Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is this moving cost calculator?
It gives you a solid ballpark — typically within 15–25% of a real binding quote. The exact price depends on your precise inventory, access conditions at both addresses, date flexibility, and whether you need packing or storage. For an accurate number, get a free binding quote from one of our licensed movers.
Why is there a minimum charge of $1,500?
Licensed interstate movers have a minimum shipment size of 286 cubic feet regardless of how little you're moving. This covers the fixed costs of dispatching a crew, truck, and driver across state lines. Even a studio move with just a few boxes will fall under this floor pricing.
Does the estimate include packing?
The base estimate covers loading, transport, and unloading only. Full packing service adds $300–$600+ depending on home size and the number of fragile items. Select packing in the calculator above to see the adjusted range.
What is a binding estimate?
A binding estimate locks your price based on the agreed inventory list — the mover cannot charge more at delivery, even if the actual weight is higher. A non-binding estimate is an approximation and can change. We recommend always requesting a binding or not-to-exceed estimate.
Why are Alaska and Hawaii so much more expensive?
Moves to or from Alaska and Hawaii require ocean freight shipping — cargo barge or container ship — in addition to ground transport. This dramatically increases the cost per cubic foot to $13–$16, versus $3–$6.50 for continental US moves.
Should I get multiple quotes?
Absolutely. We recommend comparing at least 3 binding estimates from licensed FMCSA-registered movers. All movers in our network are pre-vetted and licensed. Fill out our form and we'll match you with the best options for your route.
